It is just 80 seconds of your time I want. Please watch the video.
It is a promo that is playing frequently on SET India. A new series is due.
As it goes, a couple was having their evening tea, and the husband dared to ask a benign question to his wife, who seemed lost in thought.
“What are you thinking?“
Little did he understand that he will be dragged into a must-win guessing game.
Was she thinking about mom? Not sure whose mom was referred, but the wife had stopped thinking about her long back. A dutiful daughter (or daughter-in-law) indeed!!!
Was it the daughter? No. Though the wife thought about her daughter most of the time, this time it wasn’t about her. That’s ok, a mother also has her own personal thoughts. Quite understandable.
So, was it about the couple themselves? No, she has already resigned to that. Guess she has already resigned to the relationship itself!!!
But then, how was it the husband’s fault?
Of course it was his fault. Why could he not guess it right the first time? Enough reason for the wife to walk out of the discussion on a moral high ground.
Every time I watch this promo, only one thought comes to mind.
What a blunder it was for the husband to show concern for his pensive wife!!!
But let’s not fool ourselves by blaming the producers for making such a skewed promo based on a relationship that is supposed to be one of equals. Producers gain from popularity. And they do a lot of research before taking any step. After all a lot of funds are involved, which they don’t want should go down the drains.
Let us accept that this promo was made with the confidence that the tone will be in line with the thoughts of the majority in our society. In line with the society that feels that it is right of her to not be thankful that her partner is concerned about her pensive mood. That it is right of her to blame the husband for not being able to read her mind.
That it is right of the wife to walk out on a discussion, or maybe the relationship itself.
[Those who want to contemplate reasons that have pushed her to behave like this may please let us know if for the same reasons they would have accepted such arrogance had the genders been reversed? After all, marriage is a bond where both sides have equal standing, or is it not?].
